Birthday Party Planning Tips

Primary goal is for your child to have fun, if you can keep smiles on their faces, no tantrums or tears you have succeeded, even if your house is a disaster zone afterwards.

Your choices

  • At home or a venue
    •  is your home big enough for the children and their parents
    • do you want to spend hours cleaning your home before and after
    • at home can work out cheaper
    • home parties may be better for younger children
    • traditional parties are great at your local village hall or at your house
    • organised parties, e.g build a bear are an easier option for us busy mums
  • Party food - i always provide the following - basic and easy and I use a platter with 7 sections for all the savouries except the sandwiches
    •  sandwiches, cut into different shapes depending on the filling - use your cookie cutters
    • crisps
    • tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, grapes and strawberries
    • sausages
    • cheese cubes
    • cake pops - be as adventurous as you dare
    • fairy cakes
    • a stunning birthday cake decorated by my mum
  • Party theme ideas and party tips
    • Ist birthday party
      • This is more for the family to celebrate, so try and keep it small, teddy bears picnic is a sweet theme
    • 2nd birthday party
      • Plan it between afternoon naps
      • Nothing formal as children do not understand games at this age
      • Lots of balloons and teddy bears and cakes will make them all very happy
    • 3rd birthday party
      • Keep it simple
      • Non competitive games, where everyone wins a prize
      • Kids love creative play at this age - decorate hats, wands etc
    • 4th birthday party
      • This may be their first big party
      • Old fashioned games
      • Simple creative task at start while children are arriving, e.g make key chains or necklaces with alphabet letters and beads (buy them off ebay)
      • face painting
      • Hire an entertainer
    • 5th birthday party
      • Choose whether you are going to invite the whole class or just their main friends, do not feel under pressure to invite everyone as it can become a huge expense
      • Entertainers are great for this age group, as you need to keep them interested at all times
